Goji berriesGoji berries are red berries cultivated for thousands of years and considered an essential element in traditional Chinese medicine. They grow spontaneously in the Himalayan valleys, Mongolia, Tibet, Xinjiang, Ningxia and in autonomous region of Inner Mongolia. Goji berries belong to the Solanaceae family and are divides in two species: the Lycium barbarum and the Lycium chinense.
Nutritional values Goji berries are very rich in vitamins A, B and C and mineral salts. They contain 18 different amino acids, sterols and vegetable fatty acids, flavonoids and carotenoids and provide a wide range of nutrients useful for the health of the body.
Beneficial properties Goji berries play antioxidant, anti-aging, anti-tumor and protective functions against some eye-related illnesses (dyslipidemia, hyperglycaemia, hypertension, maculopathy). Goji berries are recommended to enhance the immune system naturally, thanks to the abundant amount of vitamins and mineral salts, the presence of LBP (Lycium Barbarum Polysaccarides) polysaccharides and a high content of carotenoids that stimulate the production of white blood cells. They also help to control cholesterol and triglycerides, blood glucose and blood pressure, prevent or control metabolic syndrome, reducing overall the chance of cardiovascular disease events. The abundance of vitamin A in the fruit also provides good protection for the health of the skin and mucous membranes. High content of tocopherols, vitamin A, E and carotenoids exerts an antioxidant action, blocking the production of free radicals responsible for cellular aging. Minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc and potassium allow to maintain the bone, cardiovascular and muscular system in a healthy way.
Benefits for sight Goji's antioxidants, in particular carotenoids such as betacarotene, zeaxanthin, lutein and lycopene, are essential for the retina and blood vessels in the back of the eye. Carotenoids also have the ability to screen for dangerous and aggressive UV rays. Goji B complex vitamins optimize the visual system and Vitamin C is essential for the formation, maintenance and repair of eye tissues.
Curcuma Longa (or Turmeric)Curcuma Longa (or Turmeric) is a perennial herbaceous plant, with the characteristic yellow rhizome, originating in South Asia, India and Indonesia. It is a spice mainly used in Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian cuisine as an ingredient for many varieties of curry.
Beneficial properties Curcumin, the major turmeric curcuminoid, has anti-inflammatory, chemopreventive and detoxifying properties.
Benefits for sight Curcuminas are also able to exert an antioxidant action, counteracting free radicals’ action and aging processes. Another fundamental action that can be attributed to the curcuma longa and widely described in the medical-scientific literature is represented by the ability of curcumin to inhibit angiogenesis, a process involved in the development and proliferation of retinical neovas, at the basis of development of age-related macular degeneration and inhibit cellular inflammatory responses protecting the cells themselves.
SpirulinaSpirulina (arthrospira platensis) is a species belonging to cyanobacteria, a phylum of photosynthetic bacteria. Proliferation in salt, warm and alkaline waters of some lakes in the world. It forms in green biomass, and for this reason it has long been traded for an algae. Spirulina is extracted from the arabospira platensis, an excellent protein supplement rich in vitamin B, vitamin A, C, D and E vitamins, as well as a remarkable calcium content and numerous antioxidants.
Beneficial properties Spirulina has a very low caloric intake and, thanks to the presence of phenylalanine, is able to act at the level of the nervous system causing a sense of satiety. The presence of omega 3 and omega 6 reduces the risk of cardiovascular complications; in addition, the presence of alpha-linoleic acid lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) and less HDL (good cholesterol) levels and therefore contributes to lowering total cholesterol levels with all the cholesterol-related complications.
Benefits for sight The presence of numerous antioxidants, fatty acids and vitamins including betacatotene, Omega 3 and 6, ascorbic acid and tocopherol, contributes to the health of the eye both in the protection of blood vessels and in the correct retinal cellular reproduction.
